In the Streets

ACT 1 has rehearsed and performed for free on the pavements and lawns of East Pierce County.

These productions have ranged from Shakespeare’s The Tempest to Seussical, Godspell, and The Lion and The Mouse, as well as “reviews” of Newsies and Annie.

It was during ACT 1’s early years in Sumner that its  performances in the downtown park created the troupe’s unique Train Freeze, which audiences eagerly anticipated each time a production was interrupted by the sound of horns from passing trains.

ACT 1 partnered with the Sumner Downtown Association, scripting memorable street-theatre characters from Mayberry, a mock 1940 fly-boy wedding complete with bridal party and chefs, and countless mystery and romance scenarios at annual Wine Walks.

The company also originated the crowd-pleasing Norman Rockwell Living Art Windows as well as the Dancing Scarecrows, Zombie Thriller Dancers, Dancing Farmers and, most recently, introduced its tribe of Rhubarbariansand the youthful Rhubarb Sprouts to the streets of Sumner.

In the Classroom

Each semester, ACT 1 offers a variety of theatre arts classes such as stage combat, musical theatre, actorcharacter development, puppetry, and script writing.

It has a range of professional members in its company – many of whom are also certified teachers – who collaborate to bring the best theatrical opportunities for students in their communities.

ACT 1 also offers one-day workshops open to all ages.
Workshops have provided instruction in make-up design and application, set construction, improvisation, vocal technique, and dance.

Through its professional associations, ACT 1 has been able to bring in specialists from England, New York and Los Angeles to offer specialty workshops.

Chris and Petra Karr also are involved with the Washington State Thespians organization, which advocates for educational theatre. They work as adjudicators and instructors at the state and national levels.

Additionally, Petra is on the Washington State Board of Directors for the Thespian Society and the  Washington State Arts and Education Council.

In the Community

ACT 1 has a role for every member of the community whether you are young or old, want to work from center stage or behind the scenes . Right now, you can find ACT1 at the Puyallup Farmers Market!

ACT 1 organizes a free Christmas caroling event each year and works with other community organizations to offer actors, dancers, singers, lighting, sound or staging for events.

The troupe volunteers with drama departments at both high schools in the Sumner School District and at local elementary schools to provide creative theatre experiences in their classrooms.

ACT 1 also offers its studio at no cost to  local artists and musicians working on a theatre production for their senior projects, allowing the artists to rehearse and perform in our theatre space.
